Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte)
Golden Milk (Turmeric Latte)
[The Golden Hour Remix]
Warm, spiced, and deeply comforting, this turmeric latte trades espresso for a slow, golden glow. No dairy, no refined sugar, just a mug that feels like a reset button.
Ingredients
2 cups (480ml) unsweetened oat milk or full-fat coconut milk
1 tsp (2g) ground turmeric (or 1 tbsp/15g fresh turmeric, grated)
1/2 tsp (1g) ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp (0.5g) ground ginger (or 1 tsp/5g fresh, grated)
1/8 tsp (0.3g) black pepper (boosts turmeric absorption)
1/2 tsp (2.5ml) coconut oil (optional, for froth)
1 tbsp (15ml) raw honey or date syrup, to taste
1/4 tsp (1.25ml) vanilla extract
Steps
Warm:
Combine milk, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, black pepper, and coconut oil in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Simmer:
Whisk continuously and heat for 4-5 minutes, until steaming but not boiling.
Froth:
Remove from heat and whisk vigorously, or use a milk frother, for 15-20 seconds until foamy.
Sweeten:
Once the milk has cooled slightly off the heat, stir in raw honey (or date syrup) and vanilla extract — adding honey after it’s off the heat keeps its natural enzymes intact.
Serve:
Pour into mugs and dust with an extra pinch of cinnamon or turmeric before serving.
Make it Good For The Gut
Turmeric’s curcumin is a well-studied anti-inflammatory compound, and the black pepper here isn’t just flavor — piperine significantly boosts curcumin absorption. Fresh ginger supports digestion, and unheated raw honey carries trace enzymes and antibacterial compounds that cooking would break down, which is why it goes in off the heat. Coconut milk contributes gut-friendly medium-chain triglycerides.
Remix Options
Iced Golden Milk: Let the mixture cool completely, then pour over ice for a refreshing version. Golden Milk Chia Pudding: Whisk the cooled mixture with 1/4 cup (40g) chia seeds and refrigerate overnight for a spoonable breakfast. Extra Spiced: Add a pinch of ground cardamom and a pinch of ground clove for a chai-adjacent depth. Protein Boost: Blend in a scoop of collagen or vanilla protein powder after frothing. Dairy Version: Swap the oat or coconut milk for whole milk (grass-fed preferred) if dairy isn’t a concern.
Good To Know
Fresh vs. Ground Turmeric: Fresh turmeric root gives a brighter, more peppery flavor than ground, but ground is more convenient and works just as well here — either is fine. Staining Warning: Turmeric stains easily; wipe up spills right away and consider an apron if using fresh root. Choosing Turmeric: Look for a bright, deep orange color as a sign of good curcumin content. Make-Ahead: Mix the dry spices (turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, pepper) in a small jar ahead of time for a grab-and-go golden milk spice blend. Storage: Leftover golden milk keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days in a sealed jar. Reheating: Warm gently on the stovetop over low heat, whisking well, since the spices settle as it sits. Troubleshooting: If the drink tastes flat, it usually needs more black pepper or a touch more sweetener — taste and adjust once warm.
