№ 10 Almond Oil
Almond Oil
Almond oil is extracted from the seed of the almond fruit through mechanical pressing methods. Unrefined almond oil is made by pressing raw almonds without the use of high heat or chemical agents, typically through cold-pressing or expeller-pressing processes. This gentle extraction method helps the oil retain much of its nutrient content, including delicate antioxidants and flavor compounds.
Almond oil is a great source of vitamin E, containing approximately 5.3 mg per tablespoon – about 27% of the recommended daily intake. Vitamin E is necessary for maintaining a healthy immune system, and it protects us against free radicals, which damage the growth and survival of cells in our body through oxidative stress. This powerful antioxidant also supports skin health and may help reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
The oil is predominantly composed of monounsaturated fats (about 70% oleic acid), which are heart-healthy and help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Additionally, almond oil contains phytosterols, plant compounds that may help lower LDL cholesterol, and small amounts of magnesium and protein-derived compounds.
Refined almond oil has a smoke point of around 420°F, making it suitable for cooking due to its high heat tolerance. Unrefined almond oil should be used as a finishing oil for salads, fish, vegetables, and cream soups, as it will not do well when heated to high temperatures due to its lower smoke point of approximately 320°F.
