Makes about 2 cups

Total Time

40 min (10 min prep)

Ingredients

Base Ingredients:
1 cup (240ml) avocado oil mayonnaise
1/2 cup (120g) grass-fed sour cream or Greek yogurt
1/4 cup (60ml) fresh lemon juice
1/4 cup (60ml) unsweetened almond milk (to thin)

Fresh Herb Blend:
2 tbsp (8g) fresh chives, finely chopped
1 tbsp (4g) fresh dill, chopped
1 tbsp (4g) fresh parsley, chopped

Seasonings:
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp (3g) onion powder
1 tsp (6g) sea salt
1/2 tsp (1g) black pepper

Steps

Base:

In medium bowl, whisk together avocado oil mayonnaise and sour cream until completely smooth and well combined.

Season:

Add fresh lemon juice, chopped chives, dill, parsley, minced garlic, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the base mixture.

Combine:

Whisk all ingredients together thoroughly until herbs and seasonings are evenly distributed throughout the dressing.

Thin:

Gradually whisk in almond milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency for drizzling or dipping.

Taste:

Sample and adjust seasonings as needed – add more salt for savoriness, lemon juice for brightness, or herbs for freshness.

Chill:

Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes before serving to allow flavors to meld and develop fully.

Store:

Transfer to airtight container and store refrigerated up to 1 week. Stir before each use as natural separation may occur.

Make it Good For The Gut (Optional)

Replace sour cream with grass-fed kefir or cultured buttermilk for probiotics and tangy flavor. Add 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar with the mother in place of some lemon juice for digestive enzymes. Include 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger for anti-inflammatory benefits. Use fermented garlic if available for additional gut-friendly bacteria.

Remix Options

Herb Variations: Try fresh basil and oregano for Italian ranch, cilantro and lime for Mexican ranch, or tarragon for French-style dressing. Lighter Version: Replace half the mayonnaise with additional Greek yogurt for lower calories and extra protein. Vegan Option: Use cashew cream or vegan mayo plus nutritional yeast for cheesy flavor without dairy. Spicy Ranch: Add 1 minced jalapeƱo, hot sauce, or cayenne pepper for heat. Buttermilk Ranch: Replace almond milk with cultured buttermilk for traditional tangy flavor. Green Goddess Style: Add 1/4 avocado and extra herbs for creamy green version.

Good To Know

Fresh vs Dried Herbs: Fresh herbs provide bright, vibrant flavor that’s essential for authentic ranch taste – dried herbs create muddy flavor and should be avoided. Mayonnaise Matters: Use avocado oil mayonnaise for healthy fats and clean ingredients, avoiding soybean or canola oil versions that can be inflammatory. Flavor Development: 30-minute chilling time allows herbs to release oils and flavors to meld together for optimal taste. Consistency Control: Start with less liquid and add gradually – you can always thin but can’t easily thicken homemade dressing. Storage Tips: Keeps 1 week refrigerated in airtight container – stir before using as separation is natural. Serving Ideas: Perfect for salads, vegetable dips, chicken wings, pizza drizzle, or sandwich spread. Make-Ahead: Actually improves after day one as flavors continue to develop and intensify in refrigerator.
